eBay charges $4.21 on a $29.99 sale. Shopify charges $1.17. But eBay includes something Shopify doesn't — customers.

eBay and Shopify both leave fulfilment to the seller. But eBay bundles payment processing into its commission and provides marketplace traffic. Shopify charges payment processing separately and leaves customer acquisition entirely to the seller. The $3.04 gap is the cost of marketplace access. Whether that $3.04 is worth it depends on what you pay to bring each customer to your Shopify store.

What this means for your business

Which platform is cheaper for my product?

Both require seller-provided fulfilment. The decision is marketplace traffic (eBay) vs owned traffic (Shopify). If your customer acquisition cost on Shopify is under $3.04/unit, Shopify is cheaper. Above that, eBay's marketplace access is the better deal.

Does the answer change across my catalogue?

eBay's commission varies by category AND seller performance — the rate on your electronics is different from your home goods, and both change if your performance rating changes. Shopify's rate is the same regardless of product. Product mix affects eBay's cost stack more.

What if I sell on both?

Many sellers use eBay for marketplace reach and Shopify for direct sales with higher margins. The analysis maps the cost stack on both and flags where each product is cheaper — accounting for your fulfilment costs and customer acquisition.

What changes when I cross a border?

eBay charges a 1.65% international fee on cross-border sales (waivable). Shopify charges 1.5–3.0% for currency conversion depending on provider. Different cross-border costs, different triggers.

The key structural difference: eBay's FVF looks higher because it bundles payment processing and marketplace access into one rate. Shopify's rate looks lower because it's payment processing only — the cost of acquiring the customer isn't visible in the platform fee.

One product. Both platforms.

Returns$0.50–2/unit$0.50–2/unit

At $5/unit customer acquisition cost on Shopify, the Shopify seller's total cost is $1.17 + $5.00 = $6.17. The eBay seller's total is $4.21. eBay is $1.96 cheaper — and the seller didn't have to run ads.

The crossover: If your Shopify customer acquisition cost is under $3.04/unit, Shopify is cheaper. Above $3.04, eBay's marketplace access is the better deal. Most Shopify sellers don't know their per-unit acquisition cost precisely — which is why this comparison matters.

The structural difference in levers: eBay's biggest lever is seller performance — something you build over time through operational excellence. Shopify's biggest lever is payment configuration — settings you can change today. But Shopify's largest cost (customer acquisition) isn't a platform lever at all — it's your marketing effectiveness.
