Walmart charges no monthly subscription. Amazon charges $39.99. That's $480/year before you sell a unit. WFS fulfilment is $0.23 cheaper than FBA on this product. But here's what most sellers miss: Walmart's New-Seller Savings programme offers 20–40% off referral fees, tiered by GMV, up to $72,000 in total savings — plus a 10% WFS discount, $500 in advertising credits, and SEM credits. And after the new-seller window, Pro Listing Savings offers 5–10% off referral fees permanently for qualifying items.
143 fee configurations. 115 cost levers. 152 eligibility requirements. The per-unit comparison to Amazon is $0.23 cheaper on this product — but the unclaimed programmes are worth multiples of that. And the comparison reverses at a different weight.
For the full methodology → How it works →
| Walmart | Amazon | Why it matters | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly subscription | $0 | $39.99 | At 40 units/month, Amazon adds $1.00/unit. Walmart adds $0. |
| Weight bands | Pound-based (7 bands) | Ounce-based (8+ bands per tier) with price multipliers | The comparison flips at different weights. |
| WFS fulfilment (this product) | $3.45 | $3.68 (FBA) | $0.23 cheaper — at this weight only. |
| New-seller discounts | 20–40% off referral fees | Varies by programme | Walmart's is tiered, automatic, and uncapped to $72,000. |
| Aged inventory (450+ days) | $7.50/cu ft | $7.90/cu ft + $0.35/unit | Both punish stale inventory aggressively. |
FIXED COSTS
Referral fees are the only fixed cost on Walmart. No closing fee. No digital services fee. No insertion fee. Simpler than Amazon, eBay, or Shopify.
Walmart publishes referral fee rates by product category. Some categories have price-band thresholds — the rate changes at different price points.
Flat-rate categories (most common):
| Category | Rate |
|---|---|
| Home, Kitchen, Decor & Garden | 15% |
| Tools & Home Improvement | 15% |
| Books | 15% |
| Baby Products (>$10) | 15% |
| Beauty, Health & Personal Care (>$10) | 15% |
| Automotive & Powersports | 12% |
| Consumer Electronics | 8% |
| Camera & Photo | 8% |
| Major Appliances | 8% |
Banded categories (rate depends on sale price):
| Category | Band | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Apparel & Accessories | ≤$15 | 5% |
| Apparel & Accessories | $15–$20 | 10% |
| Apparel & Accessories | >$20 | 15% |
| Compact Appliances | Up to $300 | 12% |
| Compact Appliances | >$300 | 8% |
| Electronics Accessories | Up to $100 | 15% |
| Electronics Accessories | >$100 | 8% |
| Jewelry & Precious Metals | Up to $250 | 20% |
| Jewelry & Precious Metals | >$250 | 5% |
| Watches | Up to $1,500 | 15% |
| Watches | >$1,500 | 3% |
So what? The banded categories create price cliffs — just like Amazon. A Jewelry item at $250 pays 20% ($50). At $251, the first $250 pays 20% ($50) and the $1 above pays 5% ($0.05) = $50.05. But pricing AT $249 vs $251 is a $2 revenue decision against a ~$50 referral fee. And unlike Amazon, Walmart's banded structures use "portion of" rules — the higher rate only applies above the threshold, not to the full price. Getting this wrong in a spreadsheet inflates your cost estimate.

PROGRAMMES
This is the section the current page barely covers — and it's where the biggest dollar amounts are. Walmart publishes programmes that discount your referral fees by 20–40% and your WFS fees by 10%. Most sellers either don't know they exist or don't realise they've been auto-enrolled.
First-time Walmart Marketplace sellers are automatically enrolled. The programme offers:
Tiered referral fee discounts:
| GMV tier | Discount on referral fee |
|---|---|
| First $0–$50,000 | 20% off |
| $50,001–$500,000 | 30% off |
| Over $500,000 | 40% off |
| Maximum total savings | $72,000 |
On the $25 Home & Kitchen product (15% referral = $3.75):
| GMV tier | Referral fee after discount | Saving per unit |
|---|---|---|
| First $50K | $3.00 (20% off) | $0.75 |
| $50K–$500K | $2.63 (30% off) | $1.13 |
| Over $500K | $2.25 (40% off) | $1.50 |
At 10,000 units/year ($250K GMV): First $50K in sales (2,000 units): $0.75 × 2,000 = $1,500 saved. Next $200K (8,000 units): $1.13 × 8,000 = $9,000 saved. Total: $10,500 in referral fee savings in year one.
Plus:
| Additional benefit | Value |
|---|---|
| WFS fulfilment fee discount | 10% off (capped at $2,000) |
| Walmart Connect advertising credit | $500 |
| SEM credit (brand owners spending $2,000+) | Up to $1,000 (50% rebate) |
| SEM credit (other sellers spending $500+) | Up to $250 (50% rebate) |
Total potential value at $250K GMV: $10,500 + $2,000 + $500 + $250 = $13,250 in year one.
The programme runs through January 31, 2027 or until maximum savings are reached. WFS Big & Bulky items are NOT eligible for the WFS reimbursement.
So what? The current Walmart fees page you've been reading elsewhere says "10% WFS discount, $0.35 savings per unit." The real programme is worth up to $72,000 in referral discounts alone.
Sellers who achieve Advanced or Pro Seller status receive ongoing referral fee discounts on qualifying items:
| Seller tier | Referral fee discount |
|---|---|
| Advanced Seller | 5% off |
| Pro Seller | 10% off |
Requirements: 9 performance metrics including On-Time Delivery, cancellation rate, and competitive pricing. Items must have competitive pricing and 2-day free shipping to qualify.
On the $25 product at 15% referral ($3.75):
| Tier | Referral after discount | Saving per unit | Annual (10,000 units) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | $3.75 | — | — |
| Advanced (5% off) | $3.56 | $0.19 | $1,875 |
| Pro Seller (10% off) | $3.38 | $0.38 | $3,750 |
So what? Pro Listing Savings is permanent — it doesn't expire like New-Seller Savings. At Pro Seller tier: $3,750/year on one product. Across a catalogue of 20 SKUs, the savings multiply.
Important: Pro Listing Savings and New-Seller Savings cannot be combined. While in the new-seller window, New-Seller Savings typically gives a higher discount. After it expires, Pro Listing Savings kicks in — if you qualify. The platform models the transition.
PLATFORM OPTIONS
Two choices: WFS or seller-fulfilled. No selling plan tiers. No store subscriptions. No insertion fee schedules. The simplest configuration options of any platform.
| Weight band | WFS rate |
|---|---|
| ≤ 1 lb | $3.45 |
| 2 lb | $4.95 |
| 3 lb | $5.45 |
| 4–20 lb | $5.75 base + $0.40/lb above 3 lb |
| 21–30 lb | $15.55 base + $0.40/lb above 20 lb |
| 31–50 lb | $14.55 base + $0.40/lb above 30 lb |
| ≥ 51 lb | $17.55 base + $0.40/lb above 50 lb |
For this product at 10 oz (0.625 lb): $3.45 per unit.
The Amazon comparison at this weight: WFS is $3.45. FBA is $3.68. Walmart is $0.23 cheaper. But the weight band structures are different — Walmart uses pound-based bands, Amazon uses ounce-based bands with price multipliers. At 1.5 lb, Walmart charges $4.95 (≤ 2 lb band). Amazon's rate at 1.5 lb depends on size tier classification. The comparison flips at different weights.
New-seller WFS discount: 10% off WFS fees, capped at $2,000 total. On this product: $3.45 × 10% = $0.35 saved per unit. At 5,714 units, the $2,000 cap is reached.

| Weight band | Return processing fee |
|---|---|
| ≤ 1 lb | $4.70 |
| 2 lb | $6.20 |
| 3 lb | $6.70 |
| 4–20 lb | $7.00 base + $0.40/lb above 3 lb |
| 21–30 lb | $15.55 base + $0.40/lb above 20 lb |
On this product (≤ 1 lb): $4.70 per return. At an 8% return rate on 10,000 units: 800 returns × $4.70 = $3,760/year in return processing. Most sellers don't track this.
Lever: Set Keep It / Partial Keep It rules to avoid return processing and removal costs on low-value items. If the product costs less to replace than to return and restock, Keep It saves money.

Walmart Marketplace charges no monthly subscription. No equivalent of Amazon's Professional plan ($39.99/month) or Shopify's Basic plan ($29–$39/month).
The crossover with Amazon: At 40 units/month, Amazon's plan adds $1.00/unit. At 100 units, $0.40/unit. At 500 units, $0.08/unit. The subscription becomes negligible at high volume — but at low volume, it's real money.
A seller doing 40 units/month saves $480/year in subscription cost on Walmart vs Amazon — before comparing any other fee.
STORAGE
Walmart's storage rates look similar to Amazon's off-peak. The penalty for slow-moving inventory is aggressive — and at 450+ days, it's the harshest on any platform.
| Period | Rate |
|---|---|
| January–September (up to 365 days) | $0.75/cu ft/month |
| October–December (stored ≤ 30 days) | $0.75/cu ft/month |
| October–December (stored > 30 days) | $1.50/cu ft/month |
| Stored 366–450 days | $2.25/cu ft/month |
| Stored 450+ days | $7.50/cu ft/month |
For this product at 0.0434 cu ft: $0.03/month at base rate.
The 450+ day penalty: 1,000 units sitting over 450 days: $7.50 × 0.0434 × 1,000 = $326/month, $3,912/year in storage — on inventory that isn't selling.
Compared to Amazon: Amazon's 456+ day equivalent: $7.90/cu ft + $0.35/unit = approximately $0.69/unit/month. Walmart's 450+ day rate on this product: approximately $0.33/unit/month. Amazon's penalty is higher per unit but kicks in 6 days later.

EXTERNAL ALTERNATIVES
Dropping WFS saves $3.48 per unit. But it costs you the WFS badge — search ranking, customer trust, and Walmart+ eligibility. The platform shows both sides.
Seller-fulfilled eliminates WFS fulfilment ($3.45) and WFS storage ($0.03) — saving $3.48 per unit. Platform fees drop from $7.23 to $3.75.
But WFS items earn the WFS badge, get preferential search placement, and qualify for Walmart+. Seller-fulfilled items lose all three.
So what? The fulfilment decision isn't just cost. When you provide your own fulfilment costs, it shows whether the saving is real or whether your 3PL eats the difference. The visibility impact is your business decision — the platform makes the cost side exact.

| Platform fees | $7.23 | $6.14 | $7.67 |
| Annual difference (10,000 units) | $4,400 cheaper | $15,300 cheaper | — |
Amazon figure of $7.67 includes fuel surcharge ($0.13) and Professional subscription allocated at 500 units/month ($0.08). Subscription included because Walmart charges $0.
A new seller on Walmart keeps $1.53 more per unit than on Amazon — $0.75 from the referral discount, $0.34 from the WFS discount, $0.23 from lower base WFS rate, $0.13 from no fuel surcharge, and $0.08 from no subscription. At 10,000 units: $15,300/year cheaper than Amazon in year one.
After the new-seller window, Pro Seller status maintains a 10% referral discount permanently: $3,750/year on this product alone.
